Viva Energy has committed to upgrading the Geelong Refinery to produce Ultra-Low Sulphur Gasoline.
The Australian Government has legislated the introduction of better quality fuel by reducing sulphur in
gasoline to enable the introduction of lower emission vehicle technology.
Viva Energy is currently seeking an EPA Development Licence to build a new sulphur removal unit and
supplementary equipment and connection systems to the existing Geelong Refinery.
The project will cost about $300m, partially funded by the Federal Government as part of its Fuel
Security Package, and at peak construction will employ up to 300 people.
Viva Energy’s Executive General Manager – Refining, Dale Cooper, said the Ultra-Low Sulphur Gasoline
project is part of the ongoing transformation of the Geelong Refinery into a modern Energy Hub which
supports energy security and plays an important role in Australia’s energy transition.
“We are looking forward to delivering an important upgrade to the Refinery that will support the
introduction of better quality fuel in Australia,” Mr Cooper said.
The EPA Development Licence application is available on the Engage Victoria website.
BACKGROUND:
The Geelong Refinery is operating in a fuels market where fuel standards are regulated by government.
Sulphur limits in Australian fuels are currently restricted to 150 parts per million by weight (ppmw) for
regular unleaded and 50 ppmw for premium unleaded, while sulphur in Diesel is limited to 10ppmw. The
fuel standards for gasoline are moving to 10 ppmw maximum on all grades.
