Viva Energy pursuing energy efficiency projects

30 Jun 2021

Viva Energy has been awarded Victorian Government grants totaling around $1 million to help it reduce energy costs and carbon emissions.

The grants are part of the $31 million Business Recovery Energy Efficiency Fund (BREEF) to help  large energy users introduce energy efficiency and demand management technologies into their operations to increase energy savings and reduce bills. Grants were recently awarded to 110 businesses.

Geelong Refinery has been approved funding to develop an ISO 50001-accredited Energy Management System, ensuring that over the next 18 months, the Refinery’s existing system will be analysed and improved to meet the latest standards.

“We are pleased to have been successful with these BREEF grants which will help us improve the Refinery’s energy efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint,” said Dale Cooper, Viva Energy’s Geelong Refinery Executive General Manager. “This work will raise the priority of energy considerations in all future Refinery projects and help drive continuous improvements in our energy efficiency and ability to reign-in energy costs. It is an important part of our sustainability journey.”

At Viva Energy’s main storage and distribution terminal at Newport, grant funding will be used to install efficient, on-demand lighting in the main road gantry and to upgrade outdated air-conditioning systems. Funding will also be used to install energy sub-metering to analyse electricity use and drive optimisation of energy consumption.

“Every step we take towards greater energy efficiency not only makes good business sense, but also helps the environment,” said Vince Neville, Viva Energy’s General Manager of Distribution Supply Chain. “These projects at our Newport Terminal will make the site safer, more efficient and moreenvironmentally friendly. Increasingly we need to be working that thinking into everything we do.”

These projects support Viva Energy’s sustainability goals of improving the energy efficiency of our operations and reducing carbon emissions. Longer term, projects such as the Geelong Energy Hub will help the company support the transition towards cleaner and more renewable energy sources.
