Viva Energy can confirm that on Tuesday 14 July, an oil leak occurred from a pipeline at the Geelong refinery near the foreshore. The pipeline has been taken out of service to identify the cause of the leak.
The area is now being managed as an active clean-up activity and the pipeline has been isolated. The drain where the pipe is located is being cleaned and impacted soil removed and disposed of appropriately.
Viva Energy continues to monitor ground water and the beach area where some residual hydrocarbon has been released. A clean-up plan has commenced on the affected area but community members are advised to avoid the area until these activities have been completed.
Viva Energy advised the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) of the incident and they have conducted a site inspection.
