Viva Energy announces the finalists for the Geelong Refinery Club Legend Awards with voting now open for the People’s Choice Awards
Viva Energy has announced the finalists of their Geelong Refinery Club Legend Awards, with the voting for the People’s Choice Awards officially live.
For the third year in a row, Viva Energy has run the Geelong Refinery Club Legend Awards to recognise the deserving individuals who tirelessly give their time and energy to help those around them, plus their sporting clubs they volunteer for.
This year, almost 90 outstanding nominations were received, resulting in 15 finalists being chosen. The announcement of the two new Trailblazer categories has seen a great range of fantastic younger nominations, celebrating the next generation of community legends.
The finalists for the Viva Energy Geelong Refinery Club Legend Awards for 2019 are:
Female Trailblazer Award
- Phoebe Mitchell – Geelong Swimming Club
- Jesse Sutton – Ocean Grove Football Netball Club
- Sarah Naylor – Geelong West Giants
Male Trailblazer Award
- Michael Trewhella – Drysdale Football Club
- Rohan Greaves – Geelong Touch Football
- Keli’I Zablan – Geelong Baycats
Female Club Legend Award
- Jenny Page – Alexander Thomson Cricket Club
- Lorraine Kulic – Lara Giants Basketball Club
- Vicky McElligott – Geelong Netball Club
Male Club Legend Award
- Gerard Wakefield – East Belmont Cricket Club
- Cliff Grinter – St Albans Football Club
- Rick Scade – FC Leopold
- Fred Forssman – Special Olympics, Barwon
- Jai Smith – Geelong Dragons
- Allen McKee – Try Boys Basketball Club
Viva Energy General Manager of Refining, Thys Heyns, said the Awards embody their commitment to giving back to the community and is thrilled to see the influx of nominations this year – particularly in the new trailblazer and female categories.
“We know that sport is an integral part of the Geelong region, so it is fantastic to not only see a growth in nominations in the Award’s this year, but also that there is a great pool of nominees across ages, sports and locations around the Geelong community,” Thys said.
“What makes these awards really special is that we get the community’s direct involvement through the People’s Choice Awards. We want everyone to have a say in who they feel are the heroes in our community.”

With $55,000 up for grabs again this year, winners, finalists and their respective sporting clubs will receive a share of the prize money. Winners will be decided by a panel of Geelong community leaders ahead of the exclusive awards evening on Wednesday 4 September.
