A cost effective and flexible way to supply gas for Victoria

Viva Energy is progressing the development of a gas terminal at the Viva Energy Hub in Geelong.

Gas is an important part of the energy mix and the gas terminal would provide vital infrastructure to ensure south-east Australia’s gas supply needs are met as traditional sources of gas from Bass Strait decline.

The gas terminal unlocks a pathway to bring in liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Australian gas fields or from around the world, effectively acting as a virtual pipeline to deliver gas directly to where it is needed most – the major Victorian markets of Melbourne and Geelong.

Approximately 2.2 million households and 65,000 businesses in Victoria rely heavily on gas for their daily needs and operations.

On May 29, 2025, the Minister for Planning announced her assessment of the environmental impacts of the proposed gas terminal, concluding that the potential environmental effects of the project can be acceptably managed.

The decision allows Viva Energy to move into the next phase of the project involving further engineering and design work, concluding the work to secure secondary approvals and locking in commercial commitments. Subject to a Final Investment Decision by the Viva Energy Board, construction could begin in 2026, with terminal operations planned to commence in 2028 when the market is expected to be short of gas.

The business that Viva Energy runs has delivered safe and reliable energy to Australians for more than 120 years. The significant investments we are making in our Viva Energy Hub at Geelong are a clear demonstration of the company’s determination to continue to meet the energy needs of the state and the nation.
